The latest temptations

Shopping in Zara or H&M has become a challenge: both used to be my primary shopping sources but have been gradually dethroned by COS.

First reason: even though some products may at times be appealing aesthetically, I have a hard time finding anything worthy. Either it's the cut and/or material, the colour, there's almost always something wrong.

Second: the ambiance in both stores almost gives me panic attacks. Between the loud and the crowd, I either flee or carefully chose my time and location to venture in these shopping arenas.

As a result, COS has become the big contender and winner. The concept developed by the brand often works for me: Products are basic yet thought-out, often (more or less) subtly inspired by favourite Northern designers (Dries, Helmut, Ann, Acne...).

Here are the two items I was really tempted to buy lately but didn't- my priority is still to limit my shopping intake :

A spring coat that would be interesting to alternate with my trench. The cut is very Marant-ish, oversized, works equally well with pants or skirts/dresses and versatile so that it can either go with a very casual outfit or a more elegant one.

A navy dress that I loved so much! The flattering lady-like retro cut would be ideal dressed down with flats and a blazer or a cardi for everyday and appropriate as well when more efforts are required with bling and a bit of heels.

As Saturday nears, I very much feel the desire to drop by the store and indulge in a bit of consuming... But I made a big purchase a few days ago and I'm feeling a bit under the weather, which is not a great combination for shopping so I'll remain "serious" and away from stores, especially COS - for the time being.

What were your recent fashion temptations? Did you resist or treat yourself?

  1. I've never been able to understand why people rave about COS... The clothes are ok, but I've never bought any, simply because they don't work on my body. Being hourglass shaped, I don't look good in shapeless clothes, so sack-like dresses are a no-no, as are cocoon coats, which is pretty much what COS is all about. This goes for all Nordic designers, by the way, and I'm very frustrated because I am Nordic, too...

    1. I guess people rave about COS because in their opinion it's pretty good! Haha! Everything's not perfect and I'd strongly recommend to try on clothes because one can be surprised (positively or not). Yet, they do have good lasting basics. And for the record, I don't own any COS shares nor get rewarded by the brand -or any other for that matter. ;)

I think what you pinpoint about the cuts and designs has a lot to do with the fact that these shapes are "trendy" now. The whole oversized, loose clothes are very popular and many (mass) designers/brands sadly only produce what will be cashed in...

  2. Hey, that's what I do too, when I have a day off in the week that's when you'll find me at Zara or H&M. I don't even try shopping on a Saturday afternoon- ever. I like to be able to actually see things properly, look at the fabric labels, at the stitches, if it's transparent etc. So I need a minimum of quiet and space.
The coat is really tempting me especially since it'd be more weather appropriate than the dress at the moment.

  3. oh i know what you mean about the ambience factor in the fast fashion stores! i recently got a few pairs of fantastic H&M 'chic' sweatpants that have been great; but both H&M and zara are very hit or miss for me. the COS that was supposed to open in NYC this spring just got delayed till fall, so i can only admire the online catalog for now. :P

    1. Haha, so I'm not the only one "suffering" when setting foot in those stores?! Plus, how often do you get all excited by an item on these fast fashion online sites and face complete disappointment when you see or try on the thing? I can't even begin to count! My silver lining: it helps me stay focused!

  4. Hello Aïssa, what coat are you wearing? I like it so much and I haven't seen this on the COS website...
    Thanks, Lily

    1. Oh I didn't realize the hyperlinks were not visible enough. If you click on the light grey word "coat" (just before the pic) it will bring you to the right page.
