Over the rainbow

Quite rare for me, it might actually be a first: an head to toe Marant look)

coat-manteau, sneakers -baskets: Isabel Marant/ knit -maille: Zara (new)/ écharpe-scarf: Cos/ trousers -pantalon: Gap (Une preuve supplémentaire de mon obsession actuelle, ce petit cachemire mandarine derrière moi... Further proof of my actual obsession, the little tangerine cashmere behind me)

March the official spring month is here, the days are (sometimes) brighter and definetely longer! Getting out of the office while the day still lingers on is one of the little pleasure of life, I never tire of years after years.

The danger of that elated spring awakening feeling is that it puts me in a shopping mood.

I won't venture in a trend report because I'm sure that from New-York to Singapour via Stockholm, you all noticed that we're supposed to be dressed in technicolor.

Is it the countereffect of economical, political, social crisis all over the world that drove the fashion industry to feed us with upbeat colors? Are we supposed to channel positive thoughts and energy because of these color influx ? Or more mundanely (and certainly), is this fashion trend aimed to make us want to buy?
Whatever is the  grand master plan orchestrated by the fashion industry's coalition, it's (partially) working on me.

Admittedly I do wear more colors and prints during the warmer seasons and obviously after months of black and grey, black on black and more darker hues, the appeal of this trend is undeniable. I want to shake things up, to welcome the coming season with novelty, a fresher eye and lots of colors!

I also seem to suffer from a minor side effect provoked by the abundance of pastel hues in stores as I suddenly get the unerving urge to sing "Over the rainbow" whenever I stroll in a boutique...
Besides that "Wizard of Oz" tune playing over and over in my head, I'm getting obsessed by anything colorful, whether it is light pink trousers à la Miranda Kerr, Johanna Hillman's Reed Krakoff gym bag or Taylor Tomasi Hill's neon green trousers and it goes on and on.

So sure I was tempted to follow the move and redo my entire wardrobe in rainbow colors but is it worth it? Will I truly and frequently wear those items which are trendy now but will I still like them after a few weeks/months? How will I pair them with what I already own? Most importantly, is it really "me" or is a spur of the moment born out of boredom and frustration of a long winter too slowly coming to an end to my taste?

Pondering these questions often saved me from impetuous and pointless purchases because most of the time the answer is an honest "no" or at least a dubious "I don't know". As a result, my shopping habit tends to be more cautious and thoughtful especially when I consider a trend.

First, before dashing into a store and purchasing the first thing catching my eye, I look into my closet where there's this 4-5 years old dusty pink embroided blouse that I hadn't worn in quite a long time, this emerald green blouse bought in a thriftstore a year ago that I scarcely wore, that decade old light pink cardigan from Comptoir des cotonniers that's still impeccable. Items I neglected which are able to satisfy my immediate cravings for fresher hues.

Then, if the craving remains to add a little extra, I stick with classical cuts, useful basics that will prove to be versatile enough :
  • a scarf. In a raspberry hue. The perfect eye popping color against my still very much needed dark outerwear but which will also work with my mid-season garments like a classic beige trench and army green jackets.
  • A mint colored knit that, while being very much trendy, easily fits with my color scheme (grey, navy, army green) and that I can already wear with a thermal underneath.
So far, I've limited myself to these 2 new "of the moment" additions that I really like and which fit easily with my existing wardrobe ensuring that I'll wear them in the long term and not just once or twice, for the sake of following a trend.

  1. This post made me smile. I'm so with you on this. I find myself being drawn to yellow lately. Yellow? I've never been into this color before, and I think I will tire of it after this season is over, but I really want something yellow! :) I think the mint top looks fabulous on you, btw.

  2. I enjoy looking at all the colours in the shops as well, and like you, I checked my closet first, and I did have one top and one dress that satisfies that colour urge perfectly.

That said, I caved and bought a printed scarf from Uniqlo because I couldn't resist the print. Scarves are one thing that really update the mood of my clothes without having to make big purchases. I'm hoping to find the perfect polka dot one some day.

I like your new buys, and I think they are well-reasoned!

  3. LN: Ah the mind plays tricks on us so easily. It's why I find writing so helpful (to a point). It puts in perspective the whole process of "need". I do need to buy a few clothes to replace used ones but instead I'm focusing on the cute new litteraly eye candy I spot in every stores... That said, sometimes, I also like that appeal fashion creates to make us want to be more adventurous. So why not a bit of yellow? Not that I want to enable you, but I find that sometimes the desire for fashion is quite similar to a food craving, once you satisfy the need in reasonable proportion, it goes away.
Thanks about the knit, just looking at it makes me long for spring!

  4. Lin: Oh dear, I'm a scarf lover too! And what do you know a polka dot scarf is also on my wish-list! Ha ha! And I'm picky too: I've been looking all winter for a cashmere red or burgundy scarf and couldn't find any I truly loved so instead of settling for second-best, the item is still on my wish-list.
Thanks because reasoned purchases are really my goal and I abide with your concept of adding an accessory to freshen up the way I perceive the rest of my clothes. Also I don't know about you but I find it more challenging and fulfilling to try to update what I already have than to buy something new.

  5. Excellent article. A suivre ;)

  6. You have such a lovely blog, so glad that I found it!

I have a random shopping impulse a lot to buy something in a bright color or print..only to find that I already have something and/or never wear it. I am trying to be more thoughtful going forward but it is difficult....great post.

Katherine: Thanks a lot! I work in a very commercial area of Paris and right now, it's quite funny because you have rows and rows of stores with colorful clothes and accessories in their windows! It's almost hilarious when you think of it!
I completely understand the temptation. I was looking at J.Crew's lookbook the other day for office looks inspiration and if I listened to myself my shopping cart would be full of green cardigans, pink trousers and whatnot because it looks so lovely (on the models!).
What restrains me (a bit) in my purchases is that my closet is full, even if I'm not always satisfied with what's in it, and the objective is to wear what I already have, instead of adding more... Easier said than done.

    Bisous
