The basics of sales

Sales have started about 10 days ago so the second markdown is on and the crowd less intense which is I why used my free Friday to stop by the stores.

Sales shopping for me falls into 2 categories: renewing the basics and adding a little fashion extravaganza.

First the basics are on my radar. It's what I wear most and discard half-heartedly after intense use so they need to be good quality: I look for natural fabric (cotton, wool, linen), they need to be well-made: I inspect for loose stitches, try it on for fit of course, look out for lopsided parts that will annoy me and care instructions to avoid dry-cleaning only.

Among those basics, there are items I buy every winter sales like clockwork:

  • Bompard's 100% cashmere socks. They're still expensive at around 38 euros after discount but they're worth every cent when it gets seriously cold.
  • Underwear from Muji is also a good investment: no loosing shape, no elastic fraying and holds up wash after wash
  • Uniqlo's Heattech thermal tshirt.

Others are more happenstance. I foraged into H&M looking for shoes from the new collection and couldn't find them. Instead, I saw these striped tops which had caught my attention earlier in the season. I liked that they were not again a navy or black on white stripes variation (which I have too many spares of, provided not the same cut or material but still...) and yet could easily blend in with the rest of my clothes. Also needed to freshen up this item category which suffers a lot.

I know without a doubt, that I'll wear these and that they won't turn out to be mistakes. I actually already wore the bordeaux/grey one this morning.

Next up are the "fun" sales purchases. TBC.

    1. Thanks Jessica! I love this kind of length, tuckable or left loose it works both ways.

  3. The bordeaux one is lovely! For sales i like to buy shoes - i find it quite easy to find classic, quality styles that are usually a strain on my budget. There are also the "special" pieces of course but I find that I tend not to wear these much, so I've restrained myself from buying more.

    1. Thanks Lin! That's a pretty good idea to buy shoes at that time. It's truly one of the most expensive post in a clothing budget when looking for quality and timeless models.
The "special" pieces have a strong pulling power but not a very lasting one sadly...

  4. Good idea about looking out for a discount on heattech items, it's worth the wait. I will shop Uniqlo more online now, especially these kind of basics since I know my size and how they fit because their Paris stores are so crowded, it's so stressing.

  5. I did purchase the JCrew duffle coat during the sales, which I am very happy about! Cashmere socks are a godsend during the wintertime, I always ask for them for Christmas! And you can never have enough striped tees, in my opinion. Those colors are nice, despite not being navy/black/gray :)

I do need to replace my white tees which are beginning to 'yellow,' but it's hard to find ones that fit the same as the ones I love now. Why can't designers just make the same basics every season, lol. My favorite one is by Rag & Bone - they have a line of basics but for some reason my fave tee was never re-released :(

Last weekend I stopped by Bergdorf Gooodman in NYC. They have amazing shoes on sale! I got a little flustered with the options and spent money in the restaurant instead, lol. Still though, we're talking $1500 shoes at 75% off, which is still steep. I remember going to the same sales several years ago and finding Chloe, Chanel shoes for $200... now the starting prices are so steep even the sale prices are ridiculous.

Maybe I'll go back this weekend with my game face on, hopefully the sale is still going on.

    1. Did you have a chance to go back shopping with snowzilla?! From what I swa on your IG, Philly is under a lot of snow!
Yesterday I was finally able to see and touch a bit of JCrew. Alas no duffle coat left. I'm still on the lookout but all the new spring collections are already taking over! So annoying.

It seems the search for the right tshirts is a common issue. What bugs me right now is that so much of them are now made of viscose not cotton. I might I have to go back to Petit Bateau, at least they don't change their products too much...

Haha, the price of "luxury brands" is such a joke! I was at the Bon Marché yesterday and there was stock from last winter sales at Dries van Noten and a year later even with further discount, the tag had me laughing inside.
