Gym Class Hero

The scene is set a few days ago, in the Isabel Marant boutique, on Saintonge street: Clients are gushing over the track pants seen on the runway. Tourists are trying out the new tie-dye sneakers and peeping on the few white Betty sneakers still available, while others are fighting over the printed number tees. The sporty trend is indeed the goût du jour.

As for me, I'm trying on sweatpants. One of those clothes which are now essential products of the brand, always renewed and redesigned season after season.

At first, when this kind of pants showed up on Marant's runway about 4 years ago now, I was dubious. On Anouck Lepère, Lara Stone or I don't know what's her name, it was obviously gorgeous. Then, picked up by her staff, its wearable factor in real life became more tangible and desirable.

I still felt the need for adaptation, a  study period and a few fittings before I embraced it. On the same basis as skinny jeans, I felt like the sweatpants cut would be unflattering on a non top-model body, not to mention its couch potatoe overtone and the more or less pathetic memories of P.E. lessons it brought back...

Then comes, as often with Marant items, the price debate. Was paying more than 100 euros for grey cotton sweatpants justified ? At the time, I had deemed it not and I had settled for a Maje replica on sales which after a couple wears was only fit for lounging wear (when I'm home alone)...

Sweatpants is typically the kind of clothes whose capacity to become a personal basic I doubted and which I now look at with triviality. In my opinion, it succeeded to overcome the test of time and its unidentified fashion object/trendy status.

When wearing mine, I actually don't feel like I'm wearing sweatpants, just cool pants.

  4. Just like you I was dubious about the sweat pants look in the beginning to, but it’s been growing on me. I got Etoile’s Hanford pants last year, and I really like them even though I can’t wear them to work. They’ll be perfect when it gets warmer. I love your look!

  5. Thanks Garderoben! Sweatpants much like sneakers provoke quite negative reactions! But the cut and materials really make all the difference. You're right, I can't wait to wear mine when it's warmer with a simple shirt and sandals.

  6. I love these on you, indeed, they do not look like sweats but just really cool pants. I think having them in black vs grey really helps with that. This is the type of outfit that goes from the airplane to dinner without a thought, love that!

  7. Thanks S! I had the Etoile sweatpants in grey as well but it's true that I prefer these black ones. They're much more versatile!
